Night fishing at IJsselhof: tips for a successful session

Night fishing at Holiday park IJsselhof in Andijk has something you won't feel anywhere else: silence, the IJsselmeer by the dyke, and your own fishing jetty right next to your holiday home. No long trek to a swim, no disturbance from walkers, no light pollution. In this guide you will read how to set up a successful night session here, which rules apply, and what you need to make it a long, productive night.

Lots of different fish species

Which fish will you catch?

The waterways surrounding our holiday homes are home to a variety of fish species, including common carp, mirror carp, linear carp, crucian carp and various species of whitefish.

The fish population mainly consists of carp weighing around 1 to 4 kg. We regularly stock the waters with additional carp to maintain a healthy fish population and enhance the fishing experience for our guests.

Looking for a bigger challenge? There are also some larger specimens swimming in the waters! Carp weighing 8 to 9 kg have been caught, although these larger fish are only caught occasionally.

Our fishing tip: you don't need heavy tackle. A fishing line with a diameter of 0.26 mm is more than sufficient, and a size 8 or 10 hook is a good choice. Even with relatively light tackle, you could be in for a big surprise!

What makes night fishing at IJsselhof special?

Four things make the difference between an average night session and a top experience at IJsselhof.

Fishing from your own holiday home

Almost all our waterside homes have their own fishing jetty at the door. You fish from your holiday home: a warm kitchen within reach, a dry place to sleep if rain comes unexpectedly, no tent or bivvy needed. That is a world of difference from traditional night fishing trips.

Peace and quiet in the park

Strict quiet hours apply in the park from 23:00 to 07:00, so other guests are quiet too. The water is dark, just the way carp like it.

Actively managed fish stock

The fish stock has been managed since 2020 by carp doctor Mark Breedveld of CarpCare. Twice a year he stocks new carp, including exclusive Japanese koi carp. On a night session the chance of a trophy catch here is real.

No permit needed in the park

You don't need a VISpas for the inland waters of IJsselhof. Catch & release is compulsory, though. For the IJsselmeer by the dyke you need a VISpas (available from De Moel in Wervershoof, 4.5 km).

Park rules for night fishing

Night fishing is allowed at IJsselhof, provided you follow the house rules. No complicated paperwork, just respect for the other guests and the fish.

  • Quiet hours from 23:00 to 07:00.
  • Maximum of 2 rods per person. No extra rods just because it is night.
  • Catch & release is compulsory. A 50-euro fine for violations, at night too.
  • Landing net and unhooking mat dry and clean on arrival, to prevent the spread of fish diseases.
  • Limited use of light. A head torch with a red mode is fine. Strong spotlights or constant lighting that disturbs other guests are not.
  • Bivvies and tents are not allowed at the shared fishing spots. Fish from your holiday home or your own jetty. If in doubt, just ask at reception.

When is night fishing at IJsselhof best?

High summer: June, July, August

Water temperature above 18 degrees, long nights with pleasant warmth. Carp then keep actively looking for food at night too. There is action especially from sunset until about 02:00 and again from 04:00 until sunrise. Between 02:00 and 04:00 it often goes quiet at the water.

Warm nights in May and September

Not every night in May or September is suitable for night fishing, but a warm summery spell in these months sometimes gives surprisingly good sessions. Check the weather forecast beforehand and choose nights with a minimum temperature above 14 degrees.

Before thunderstorms and in light rain

Carp react to changes in air pressure. The hours before a thunderstorm often bring intense activity. Light rain also gets the bites going.

Dark nights

At full moon the water is lighter and carp are more cautious. Dark nights or cloudy skies work better for most carp. Mirror carp, by the way, often stay active even at full moon, but mainly in deeper water.

Frequently asked questions about night fishing at IJsselhof

What time exactly do the park's quiet hours start?

From 23:00 to 07:00. You may continue fishing, but quietly: no loud alarms and no loud talking.

Can I set up a bivvy or tent at the fishing spot?

Not at the shared fishing spots. At your own waterside holiday home you don't need a tent. If you are unsure whether you may put up a shelter on your own jetty, just ask at reception.

Can I buy something at reception at night if I forget something?

Reception is not open 24/7. Make sure you have everything you need in advance to avoid surprises. Pellets, sets and bait can be ordered in advance with your reservation.

Can I fish on the IJsselmeer at night?

Yes, provided you have a valid VISpas. The IJsselmeer is outside the park, so the quiet hours rule does not apply there, but please respect nature and other visitors.
