Fishing tips: bait, technique and rules

What works at Holiday park IJsselhof? In this guide you will find all the practical fishing tips for our West Frisian waters: from the right bait and the best techniques to seasonal tips, rules and specific tactics per species. With advice from carp doctor Mark Breedveld of CarpCare, who has actively managed the fish stock in the park since 2020.

IJsselhof: an actively managed fishing location

To ensure the quality of fishing at Holiday park IJsselhof, we pay close attention to managing our inland waters and fish stock. The waters hold various species, including common carp, mirror carp, linear carp, crucian carp hybrids and coarse fish. We also regularly stock new carp to keep the fish population healthy and varied.

For you as an angler, this means you can enjoy well-maintained fishing waters with every chance of a nice catch.

Which fish swim in the waters?

The inland waters around the holiday homes hold:

  • Common carp
  • Mirror carp
  • Linear carp
  • Crucian carp hybrids
  • Coarse fish, such as roach and bream

On the neighbouring IJsselmeer you can also fish for:

  • Pike
  • Carp
  • Ide

General fishing tips for IJsselhof

Whether you are fishing for carp, coarse fish or pike, these park-specific tips apply to all species.

The right season

You can fish all year round, but the fish are most active from May to October, when the water is warmer than 14 degrees. Early morning and early evening then give the most activity. In spring and autumn the feeding time shifts towards the middle of the day. Planning a weekend away or a longer fishing holiday? Then these months are our top recommendation.

The right bait

Our carp are used to Carp Pro Plus 6-millimetre pellets. These pellets are available at reception and can be ordered in advance with your reservation. For coarse fish, sweetcorn or a small boilie also work well. In our densely stocked carp ditch only Carp Pro Plus pellets may be used as feed.

Landing net and unhooking mat

We recommend using a landing net and unhooking mat for every catch. Important: when you arrive at the park, your landing net and unhooking mat must be dry and clean. This prevents fish diseases being transferred from other waters.

Catch & release is compulsory

Catch & release is compulsory at IJsselhof. Taking or eating caught fish is not allowed. Violations incur a 50-euro fine. For wounds on caught fish, use Carp Care Wound Seal from the CarpCare product line, available at reception.

Keep your distance from the bank

Fish are naturally cautious, especially carp. Keep 2 to 3 metres away from the water's edge. The fish will be less disturbed and stay longer in your swim. A simple rule that makes the difference between one bite and an afternoon full of action.

Specific fishing tips per species

We have put together separate guides with in-depth tips per species and fishing style. Click through to the guide that matches what you want to catch.

Carp fishing at IJsselhof

Carp fishing is IJsselhof's speciality. Our inland waters are rich in different carp species, and the densely stocked carp ditch offers extra opportunities for the real enthusiast. Carp doctor Mark Breedveld shares his best tips on bait, lead, helicopter rigs and the soft West Frisian bottom.

Night fishing

Night fishing is allowed at IJsselhof, provided you respect the quiet hours from 23:00 to 07:00. The peace of the park on the IJsselmeer makes this a unique experience, especially in the summer months. Use a quiet set-up, bells or bite alarms, and look after your baited spots carefully.

Pike fishing on the IJsselmeer

Pike fishing on the IJsselmeer

Outside the park, the IJsselmeer lies right by the dyke. A vast freshwater lake with pike, carp and ide, a challenge for the experienced angler. For the IJsselmeer you need a VISpas, available from Hengelsport De Moel in Wervershoof (4.5 km from the park).

Where can you fish at IJsselhof?

Our park map shows three types of fishing water in the park, plus the IJsselmeer by the dyke.

Your own fishing jetty at your holiday home

Most waterside holiday homes have their own fishing jetty. The Hoorn Wellness 4 and Hoorn 6 homes are on a wide stretch of water with a beautiful open view. Many other holiday homes are on our ditch, home to common carp, mirror carp and various coarse fish species. So you can enjoy a relaxing day of fishing straight from your garden.

Fishing jetty behind reception

Behind reception there is a public fishing jetty that all park guests may use. This central fishing spot is ideal for guests without their own jetty or for anglers who would like to try a different spot in the park.

Fishing on the IJsselmeer

For the IJsselmeer you need a VISpas. It is available from Hengelsport De Moel in Wervershoof, about 4.5 kilometres from the park.
